Es ist jetzt fast 3 Wochen her, dass ich meinen letzten Blogeintrag gemacht habe. Ich hatte sehr viel zu tun mich an das Collegeleben zu gewöhnen, das am Harper College umfangreicher ist. Das Harper College wurde im September 1967 geöffnet und ist mit rund 40.000 Studenten jedes Jahr ein für amerikanische Verhältnisse mittelgroßes College.

Viele von euch erwarten jetzt wahrscheinlich ausschweifende Geschichten von Studentenpartys, wie sie in etlichen amerikanischen Filmen zu sehen sind. Leider muss ich euch meinerseits enttäuschen, da das Studium am Harper College sehr ernster Natur ist. Das liegt wahrscheinlich auch daran, dass die Studenten, die das Harper College besuchen, sich ein wiederholen eines Semesters aufgrund der immens hohen Studiengebühren einfach nicht leisten können. Beim Harper College handelt es sich um ein sogenanntes Community College. Der typische Student ist im Durchschnitt rund 22 Jahre alt und finanziert sein Studium weitestgehend durch einen oder gelegentlich auch mehrere Jobs selbst. Da bleibt nicht viel Zeit für andere Dinge. Als Vollzeitstudent ist in der Regel mit rund 40 Stunden die Woche zu rechnen, wobei nur ein Bruchteil der Zeit im College selbst verbracht wird. Hauptsächlich findet das Studium in Eigenregie Zuhause statt.

Jedoch gilt es nicht zu sagen, dass diese Studentenpartys ein reiner Mythos sind. Es gibt sie. Jedoch an anderen Colleges, die meist irgendwo im Nirgendwo stehen und die Studenten nicht aus der Umgebung bezogen werden, sondern meist direkt auf dem Campus in sogenannten Dorms leben.

Ich habe bisher eine wirklich gute Zeit an meinem College verbringen können und habe bereits eine ganze Menge gelernt und mir einen zukunftsorientierten Blick aneignen können. Denn das ist Hauptsächlich worauf sich der Kern meines Studiums bezieht.

Erste Freunde sind leicht gefunden. Zu amerikanischen Studenten an meinem College gilt zu sagen, dass es wirklich sehr nette und offene Menschen sind, jedoch die amerikanische Kultur nicht darauf ausgelegt ist schnell neue Kontakte zu knüpfen. So waren meine ersten Kontakte am College Luis und Mike. Luis ist lustiger Weise Colombianer und Mike Amerikaner russischer Herkunft. Am International Day konnte ich dann meine Kontakte um Dijana, eine serbische Au Pair / Studentin erweitern können. 2 Wochen später konnte ich dann Anthony, ein amerikanischer Student meines Weightlifting-Kurses hinzuzählen. Christian mein Buddy aus dem Nachbarort ist aus Bitburg und studiert auch am Harper College. So ist eine Bande entstanden, mit der man auch mal auf die Piste gehen kann.

So viel zu bisherigen Sozialen Kontakten, es gilt zu bedenken: Ich bin ja auch erst 5 Wochen in den Staaten.

Zum Aufbau des Colleges. Das College ist ein Gebäudekomplex aus 26 einzelnen Gebäuden mit Vorlesungsräumen. Es befinden sich 2 Starbucks in Gebäude A und H und ein Subway in Gebäude Z. Gebäude A hat außerdem noch eine Kantine, in der man sich an 2 Tagen die Woche von Studenten der Culinary Arts verwöhnen lassen kann. So ist auf jeden Fall für das leibliche Wohl der Studenten gesorgt.

Da ich mich nicht großartig um die Studiengebühren kümmern muss, da diese vom Stipendium gedeckt sind haben mich am meisten die Preise für die Lehrbücher geschockt. Ich musste für meine Kurse insgesamt 5 Bücher kaufen müssen und nur um euch eine Idee von den Preisen zu geben: Das teuerste von meinen Büchern hat 250 Dollar gekostet und da gibt es keinen großen Sprung zwischen dem billigsten und dem teuersten meiner Bücher. Jedoch bin ich noch recht günstig davon gekommen, da ein Buch der Rechtwissenschaften zum Beispiel schon mal so um die 700 Dollar kosten kann.

Da ich nur ein Semester am College studieren werde habe ich meine Kurse rein nach Interesse bezogen gewählt und nicht nach Major. So studiere ich Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Spanisch, Weightlifting und Physical Fitness. Meine Kurse erstrecken sich von Montag bis Donnerstag mit vielen Assignments, die Zuhause erledigten werden müssen.

Da es keine Studentenverbindungen im klassischen Sinne an meinem College gibt, sind sogenannte Clubs eine große Nummer. Ich bin Mitglied im Business & Entrepreneurship Club. Dieser Club führt eine Art eigene Firma direkt im College. Der Plan ist einen Fund Raising Color Run zu organisieren, der im März stattfindet und die Erlöse fließen dann an eine Brustkrebsorganisation der Umgebung.

Das Studium am Harper College erfordert einiges an Engagement um am Ball zu bleiben, aber macht wirklich sehr viel Spaß.

It’s now almost 3 weeks ago, that I posted my last update concerning my blog. I had lots of stuff to do getting used to college life at Harper College, which in unusually more substantial than I expected it to be. Harper College was founded in September 1967 and is with roundabout 40,000 students each year a middle sized college.

I bet many of you expect me now to tell insane stories of the legendary college parties, as seen in many American movies. I am very sorry, but I think I have to disappoint you, since studying at Harper is of serious nature. One reason for that circumstance is in my opinion the fact that most of the students just can’t afford repeating a semester due to very tuition. Harper College is a so called community college and is mainly visited a student of the average age of 22 who mostly finances the tuition by him- or herself with working in 1 or 2 jobs. That doesn’t leave a lot of time for other things. As a full time student the college expects minimum 12 credit hours each semester which equals roundabout 40 hours of study in a week, throughout the main part of it is not taking place in the class room but at home or anywhere else.

However it’s not said that those parties doesn’t exist. They do. But mainly in Colleges located in the middle of nowhere which don’t obtain their students from the surroundings but have them located in college owned dorms.

I have to say that I really have a very good time at Harper so far and that I have learned quite a bit in the last 3 weeks. I already got a new mindset that is more future orientated than it was before. Because such values are a major part of my studies.

First friends are easily found, even though I have to say that the American culture is not created to quickly build a solid connection to new individuals. However most Americans are very kind and friendly people. My first contacts in college were Luis and Mike. Both very nice students from my entrepreneurship class. Luis is a Colombian guy and Mike is American with Russian roots. On international day I was able to extend my small circle of friends with Dijana, a Serbian au pair / student. 2 Weeks after the first days of school Anthony, a very friendly American student from weightlifting class started to build and connection. Christian my German buddy from Bitburg located in the neighborhood of Arlington Heights is always down for starting something. That way I build a nice little circle of friends that is always down to rock the night.

So far so good, one always have to keep in mind: It where only the first 5 weeks.

College structure. Harper College is a complex built of 26 buildings which harbor lots of class rooms. There are 2 Starbucks in building A and H and as well there is one Subway in building Z. Building A as well has a canteen in which on two days each week students of culinary arts will do their best. That way no one has to starve during a hard day of college.

Since I did not have to worry about tuition because it is covered by the scholarship the most shocking circumstance was the prizing of text books required for class. I had to purchase 5 books for my classes and just to give you an idea of how expensive it is: The prizes can vary from 100 – 700 bucks a book.

The fact that I am not studying a major subject at Harper because I only attend 1 semester I had the option to purely choose my classes by interest and not by what a major would require. That way I ended up studying Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Spanish, Weightlifting and Physical Fitness. My classes spread from Monday to Thursday with many assignment that have to be done at home.

There are no student associations in the classical sense but the clubs are a definitely a big thing. That’s why I became a member of the Business and Entrepreneurship Club. We are somewhat running a own little business at Harper with planning a fund raising color run for March 8^th 2016 and donating the earnings to a breast cancer organization around.

Studying at Harper requires lots of commitment and encouragement to keep up with everything, but really is a lot of fun.
