Nachdem wir im JFK-Airport sicher gelandet waren und von Cultural Vistas empfangen wurden, ging es auch auf direktem Wege mit dem Bus nach Manhatten. Ich war und bin einfach überwältigt. Diese Stadt lässt sich einfach schwer in Worte fassen. Die Menschen hier sind sehr „busy“ und leben auf der Überholspur. Und das muss man auch, wenn man in dieser Stadt nicht untergehen will! Wer in Manhatten leben will, muss für eine Ein-Zimmer-Wohnung mindestens 3 000$ zahlen. Ein Studium an einer Universität ist mit 70 000$ pro Jahr zu begleichen und für einen Schnellimbiss hat man hier eben auch schnell 20$ ausgegeben (zur Erinnerung: der Kurs Euro/Dollar ist momentan fast 1:1). Leider schafft nicht jeder dieses Leben, deshalb sieht man hier auch viele arme Menschen deren einziges Hab und Gut aus einem ausgeklappten Pappkarton besteht – als Matratze.
Umso dankbarer bin ich, ein Teilnehmer von diesem Programm zu sein und Manhatten in vollen Zügen genießen zu dürfen. Die Freiheitsstatue, den Central Park und den Time Square kann ich zumindest nun von meiner To Do-Liste abhaken. Natürlich hab ich auch viele andere wahnsinnig aufregende Sachen sehen und erleben dürfen. Jetzt heißt es jedoch Abschied nehmen. Ab heute beginnt meine Reise nach Wyoming. Mit Amtrak (Zug) geht es erstmal nach Chicago und dann weiter Richtung Princeton. Dort wartet meine erste Gastfamilie auf mich um mich für vier Tage zu beherbergen. Danach heißt es „Going straight to the Wild Wild West“!
